From Ireland to the Czech Republic

Rychnov nad kněžnou is a beautiful and historical town here in the Czech Republic. Rychnov has a population of around 11,000 people. The town square is easily accessible, and all your amenities are there. The people in Rychnov are friendly and always polite. Rychnov has beautiful parks, castles, and churches that we can admire every day. Although being in a different country that speaks a different language to you can be difficult, thankfully we have settled in easily into Czech life as volunteers and living in such a lovely town like Rychnov makes it easier.

Belmullet, County Mayo, is where I come from in Ireland. For reference, Belmullet to Rychnov is 2,308.3 km in distance. Belmullet is a small town with a population of just over 1,000 people. To say there is a population difference between both places would be an understatement. The people of my town are also very friendly and polite. In Belmullet everybody knows everybody due to there being such a small population within a small area, therefore it is easy to know everyone’s families. This was a slight culture shock for me when arriving to Rychnov, as I was now in a place where I did not know anyone and could not speak the language. As time has gone on, I have gotten to know the locals and I am greeted with a friendly hello or ahoj when passing by, similar to home, which has helped me settle into life in the Czech Republic. – Olivia
